The area around Aylesham is dominated by agriculture, strong rural heritage, scattered settlements and remnants of former mining activity. The ferry port of Dover is close by, while international rail services can be found at the Channel Tunnel site at Cheriton and at Ashford International Station, where Eurostar services connect the county to destinations across Europe. Kent International Airport at Manston is a few miles to the east.
